ALBANY — Maxine Larsen, a mother of five, enjoyed rug-hooking, sewing, and quilting.

She died on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. She was 96 and had most recently lived in Albany’s Teresian House.

Mrs. Larsen was born on Dec. 5, 1921 in Cherryfield, Maine to Ella and James Pinkham. She was one of 13 children. She attended Cherryfield Academy through the eighth grade when she left for Boston to help out the family by being a nanny to her sister’s children.

At age 17, she left for New York to marry Edward Larsen. Together, they had five children. In addition, Mrs. Larsen “kind of adopted” others along the way, her family wrote in a tribute. Her grandchildren — she had 23 — called her “Grami.”

Mrs. Larsen worked several jobs and was employed by the New York State Department of Health for many years from which she eventually retired. “While working for the state, she achieved one of her dreams,” her family wrote. “She obtained her GED, something she was very proud of.”

Maxine Larsen is survived by her children, Edward Larsen Jr. and his wife, Susan, Judith Tonna and her husband, John, Cheryl Sherwin and her husband, Peter, Bruce Larsen and his wife, Adelaide, and Brian Larsen and his wife, Debbie; and by her 23 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by one sister, Nellie, her only surviving sibling, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at the Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont, on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following. A Celebration of Life and interment will be scheduled at a later date.
