Why are my county taxes up 10 percent?

To the Editor:

I read The Enterprise every week, yet I don’t recall reading about our property taxes, specifically the Albany County taxes going up the way they did.

I just pre-paid them as many other people did and I was shocked that the Albany County taxes went up nearly 10 percent for last year. In these times why is this necessary? It really annoys me!

Can you do a piece on this subject?

Guilderland

Editor’s note: We’ve written extensively on the marked reduction of Guilderland’s state-set equalization rate, from 88 percent in 2016 to 76 percent in 2017, but had focused largely on the effect it had on Guilderland residents living in school districts other than Guilderland.

The shift in equalization rates affects any taxes where different municipalities are involved.

Thanks for asking. See related story in this week’s edition.
