To the Editor:

I had a thought: wouldn’t it be wonderful if a society and cultural group would settle and live peacefully in America?

This society would have its own schools, laws, and manner of dress, and would definitely be outside the norms of mainstream America. Its members would be eligible for many financial-aid programs from our government, but they are proud and independent and would not accept such assistance.

Also, they would not seek any converts to their way of life, and are considerate and thoughtful of their neighbors.

Yes, we have such a group; they are referred to as the Amish.
