Albany Med EmUrgent Care opens first Guilderland branch
GUILDERLAND — Albany Med EmUrgent Care, which now has 11 facilities in the Capital Region, opened its first branch in Guilderland on Sept. 1.
The 5,195-square-foot office in Karner Plaza, at 5 New Karner Road, is open every day including holidays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Guilderland’s EmUrgent Care can see patients with illnesses and injuries including colds and flu, ear and throat infections, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, sprains, strains, bone fractures, and cuts and lacerations. And staff can perform physical examinations.
The center can take X-rays and also perform electrocardiogram tests, or EKGs, for signs of heart disease.
All 11 of the EmUrgent Care locations have nearly identical layouts, said Joni Ryan, who is the occupational medicine coordinator for all of Albany Medical Center’s EmUrgent Care facilities in the Capital District.
The identical layout is important since doctors and physician’s’ assistants rotate among the sites, and must know where items are located. “When they open a drawer, they know what’s in there,” Ryan said.
Albany Med EmUrgent Care will be staffed by 11 full-time and six per-diem employees.
EmUrgent Care locations see many patients who do not have a primary-care physician, Ryan said.
What the office cannot do, Ryan said, is bloodwork or follow-up on patients’ conditions. “We are not primary care,” Ryan said.
The office can provide a list of primary-care providers and a prescription for bloodwork.
While this is the first EmUrgent Care in Guilderland, Albany Med has another practice in town — the Great Oaks Pediatric Group at 100 Great Oaks Blvd.
