NEW SCOTLAND — A dump truck turned over on Cass Hill Road yesterday morning just before 11 a.m. while going around a sharp corner — the driver came away with minor injuries, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Vincent R. Quinn was driving the new truck for Robert Wright Disposal, which recently won a contract with the town of New Scotland to collect residents’ garbage.  Part of the reason that the company offered the lowest rate out of the four companies that bid for the job was because it uses trucks that have mechanical arms to lift garbage cans from the curb, which cuts down on workers’ compensation claims, since employees don’t get out of the trucks to lift the cans and their contents into the trucks, Jerry Wright explained to the town board in May.

Quinn was the only person in the vehicle and the only person involved in the accident.  He was treated at the scene by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Medical Services Unit and the Onesquethaw Ambulance Service.  He was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for further treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.

It is unclear whether or not tickets will be issued, said Mark DeFrancesco, an inspector with the sheriff’s office who was at the scene.  Quinn indicated to sheriff’s deputies that the brakes were weak, DeFrancesco said, adding that he “may have been going too fast.”

Skid marks were apparent on the road, which indicates braking, DeFrancesco said, but the truck will be studied to determine whether or not there were mechanical failures.

It took emergency workers about three-and-a-half hours to remove the truck from the embankment over which it slid.  “Due to the extent of damage and location of the garbage truck, the truck had to be cut using torches, separating the body from the chassis in order for heavy duty tow trucks to remove it,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
