GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland girls’ lacrosse team saw its mirror image on Friday, and the Lady Dutch did not like the results.

On a hot, steamy day in Cortland, the Guilderland team faced the toughest challenge it had seen all season in a squad from Farmingdale.

The Long Island team played with the same kind of speed and skill as Guilderland and took the Lady Dutch out of their desired style of play to post a 16-10 win in the Class A state semifinals at the State University of New York at Cortland.

The Dalers lost in the state championship game, 13-12, to Section III power West Genesee of Syracuse.

“They controlled the game,” said senior co-captain Abbey Fashouer. “We didn’t play our game.”

“We didn’t answer today,” said Guilderland Coach Gary Chatnik. “Usually, when the other team scores, we come right back. But it was not our day to answer.”

“The start we wanted”

The Lady Dutch scored the first two goals of the game, but Farmingdale answered with the next four tallies to take a lead they would never relinquish.

The Dalers took a 6-2 lead before Danielle Tetreault’s goal with 1:53 before the halftime intermission cut the lead to three goals and gave the Dutch some momentum.

Daley assisted on the goal after scooping up a ground ball and sprinting up field. Daley passed the ball to Tetreault who fired into the goal to made the score 6-3.

Junior Jen Madsen got the Lady Dutch on the board in the first half on a tally with 20:07 remaining in the opening 25 minutes. Amanda Best assisted on the goal.

Daley made the score 2-0 with 18:56 left in the half. Tetreault assisted on the goal.

“We got the start we wanted,” Fashoeur said.

Any momentum that the Lady Dutch got from Tetreault’s goal late in the first half quickly ended due to the goal-scoring talents of Farmingdale’s Candice Rossi.

“It was tough”

Rossi won the draw to start the half, sprinted toward the goal, and fired a shot into the goal just 12 seconds into the half.

Rossi scored again with 23:04 left in the game with an assist from Jamie Leone.

Those two quick goals stunned the Lady Dutch and made the score 8-3.

Daley scored for Guilderland with 21:02 left in the game to make it a four-goal game but that would be the closest the Lady Dutch would get.

“We got it to 6-3 at halftime and we were OK with that,” Chatnik said. “Then they scored the next two goals after the half. We then switched to a different defense after that. We kept playing, but they had a couple of runs that we couldn’t come back from. They were able to keep that five- and six-goal advantage.”

Janine Hillier, who scored two of the Dalers’ six first-half goals, added another with 18:36 left in the game.

Alyssa Kildare scored on a free position shot after a Lady Dutch foul with 17:21 left to make it a 10-4 contest.

Rossi scored with an assist from Melanie Rasso and Hillier scored to put Farmingdale up by eight points, 12-4.

Guilderland came back with two goals.

Tetreault scored her second goal with 10:47 left in the contest and Fashouer scored on a strong drive from behind the goal about 30 seconds left in the game to make the score, 12-6.

But, Kelly McPartland scored with an assist from Hillier with 9:58 left in the contest and Raso scored off a pass from Kildare to put an end to any chance the Lady Dutch had for a comeback.

But the Dutch didn’t quit as Kristen Cagino scored with 8:35 left in the game with an assist from Fashouer.

Fashouer, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored an unassisted goal with 7:10 left.

Raso and Kildare scored again for Farmingdale to build the lead to eight goals.

Fashouer scored off a pass from Madsen and Tetreault scored on a free positon with 53 seconds left to cap off the scoring for the Lady Dutch.

“It was tough,” Chatnik said. “They were getting the ball down the field. We couldn’t handle their transition. We just didn’t have it today. Farmingdale is very good.”

Sophomore goalie Amanda Santandrea made 11 saves for Guilderland.

“Andrea played very well,” Chatnik said. “She made a couple of big plays.”

“A great year”

Senior co-captain Lauren Cagino was given a sportsmanship award and Daley and Tetreault were given Brine Choice Awards.

“We pushed through the heat on the field,” said Fashouer, who will play at the University of Delaware next year. “I’m very proud of this team. I’m sure they’ll be back.”

Fashouer is just one of three players that will be graduating from the Guilderland team. The Lady Dutch won their second-straight Section II title and then won their first regional crown by beating Lakeland-Panas and Kingston. Guilderland was trying to become the first Section II team to win the state tournament.

“We were very excited,” Fashouer said. “It was not one of our better games. But it was a great year. My teammates were great. I couldn’t have asked for a better team.”

“Next season, they’ll continue to be very focused,” Chatnik said. “They have experience now. They came back to make it very respectable. They’re taking the loss hard. We were not expecting it. We came in playing to win. We have to take it to another level. We will.”
