Knox Town Hall in an elevated state

KNOX — This month’s work on the town hall reconstruction has brought the building closer to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act, with the installation of an elevator.

“They’re working on it as we speak,” Supervisor Michael Hammond said Friday, “but the elevator is basically in.”

The 1977 town hall is getting $1.3 million in renovations. At the meeting, the town board voted to authorize a total $243,297.43 in payments for the town hall project, to the following contractors:

— M.A. Schafer Construction, to be paid $35,100 for roof work;

— Wainschaf Associates, to be paid $80,005 for general work;

— Tri-Valley Plumbing and Heating, to be paid $20,971.25 for plumbing work;

— Eckert Mechanical Services, to be paid $94,430 for heating, venting, and cooling work; and

— Phoenix Electrical Company, to be paid $12,791.18 for electrical work.

Construction for the town hall project began in August, and is expected to reach completion in April.

Other business

In other business at its Feb. 9 meeting, the town board:

— Paid $8,996 to Sacco and McKinney Architects for architectural and engineering services from Nov. 30, 2009, to Jan. 29, 2010;

— Authorized Supervisor Hammond to renew the town’s contracts for ambulance services, as Knox has no ambulance service of its own, and to pay the following budgeted amounts for those services: to the Altamont Rescue Squad, $24,192; to Helderberg Ambulance, $25,500; and to the town of Guilderland for advanced life support services, $43,763;

— Authorized Hammond to renew the town’s contract with and pay the budgeted $6,000 to the Altamont Library, and to renew the town’s contract with and pay the budgeted $1,500 to the Berne Library, as Knox has no library of its own;

— Authorized Hammond to renew the town’s contract with the city of Albany for use of its landfill, and to pay the city at a rate of $52 per ton of waste;

— Approved a transfer of $55,000 from the highway fund to the highway capital reserve fund, to be used in the event of equipment purchases;

— Approved a $4,240 contract with K Sickler-Murphy, records management consultants, to perform a professional records-management survey and needs assessment of records at Town Hall. The town had originally planned on hiring the firm to do an inventory, build a database, and perform a needs assessment for the records, but, Hammond said, “The state cut back on those grant funds by 40 percent, so we had to cut back on the type of services we would be getting.”

— Agreed to advertise the position of recording secretary to the planning board, to fill the vacancy left by Catherine Traina, who has retired;

— Heard that the town has received $25,000 from the sale of a town truck;

— Heard that the town has received its $15,459.49 franchise fee from Time Warner;

— Heard that the town has received $11,842.88 from AT&T and $15,586 from Verizon for their shared cell tower on town property; and

— Tentatively rescheduled Knox Winterfest for Feb. 27, if weather permits.
