Saturday rsquo s Altamont 5K rains runners

By Jordan J. Michael

ALTAMONT –– The rain came down on Saturday, but hundreds of runners competed in the 12th Annual Altamont 5K at Bozenkill Park.

“The rain got pretty heavy at times, but there was still a great crowd,” said race organizer Phil Carducci. “The rains came and more runners kept coming.”

Four-hundred-and-seven people finished the race, a new record for the event.

C.J. Sousis, 16, of Troy, finished first with a time of 16:42. Courtney Tedeschi, 14, of Westerlo, was the first woman to finish the race in 30th place with a time of 19:41.

Sousis and Tedeschi each received a crystal pyramid trophy in honor of the late Reid Northrup, the longtime Altamont Fair manager.

“It’s great to see local kids win the race because it shows that this area can compete with the best runners around,” Carducci said. He knows both Sousis and Tedeschi.

The Altamont 5K continues to be one of the fastest cross-country courses around with its downhill slopes and flat straightaways. “This is the biggest summer race that doesn’t pay money to the winners,” said Carducci. “It will keep growing.”

The annual race at Bozenkill Park has had participants from England, Ohio, and Hawaii.

“This event has a straightforward atmosphere and everyone is nice,” Carducci said. “Bob Lord was out in the park playing some live tunes and we usually have some music playing on the course. But, there was too much rain for that this year.”

Even with the rain, the participants and the crowd were thoroughly entertained.

“The sponsors and the volunteers take care of everyone,” said Carducci. “If we didn’t have them, then we wouldn’t have a race.”
