STAR deadline is March 2

GUILDERLAND — Residents of Guilderland still have time to apply for the School Tax Relief exemption.

The STAR program is administered out of the town sssessor’s office; applications can also be accessed online at the Guilderland Town Hall website, through a link that directs traffic to the New York State Office of Real Property Service website. Jean Cataldo, receiver of taxes, also has applications readily available in her office.

Cataldo said she promotes the STAR benefit. “If I get someone’s taxes and notice that they haven’t applied for STAR, I bring it to their attention, especially with the way the economy is today,” she said. “People need tax relief.”

The basic STAR exemption is not based on income; the only requirements are that a person is under the age of 65, and owns and occupies a house within the town of Guilderland. There is an enhanced STAR benefit for individuals over the age of 65. The program includes a school property tax rebate program and a partial property tax exemption from school taxes.

The deadline for the application for STAR is March 2 this year.
