B-K-W girls soccer vs Schoharie
BERNE The Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls soccer team was on the wrong end of an evenly played game on Friday.
The Lady Bulldogs couldnt get the equalizer in the final minutes against Schoharie and lost to the Indians by a 2-1 score.
The game was tied at halftime, but Schoharie scored with 13:47 left in the second half and held on for the win by using solid defense.
The Lady Bulldogs pressed the Indians defense but could not get the tying goal though they had some opportunities.
BKW got quality shots by Dana Ames, Lauren Ford, and Cara Swain. But the Indians focused on Swain, shutting out the Bulldogs leading scorer.
"They knew who to trap and double mark," said BKW Coach Coriellen Travis. "They shut her down today."
Schoharie scored first with 22:25 left in the first half. The BKW players were on an offensive charge when Schoharie took possession of the ball and sent it over the top of the BKW defense.
Schoharies Kelly Gannon got to the ball and kicked it by BKW goalie Sarah Hannay for the score.
The tide of the game flowed back and forth and BKW tied the game with 4:51 left until halftime.
Lauren Ford scored for the Bulldogs with an assist from Caitlyn Osterhout.
She made the goal after Swain and Schoharies goalie collided going for a loose ball. Both players remained on the ground, but play continued. The ball got to Osterhout, who passed it to Ford who got a shot before the Schoharie goalie could recover and make a play.
Both players were okay after the collision and played the rest of the game.
Gannon scored her second goal with 13:47 left in the game to give the Indians the lead for good.
"It was a well-played game for both teams," Travis said. "For the seniors, it was the last home game. They all got in and they worked hard today."
Fridays loss was a lot closer than an earlier loss the Bulldogs suffered from the Indians.
"We lost to Schoharie, 6-2, last time," Travis said. "We came out and played a very strong game. We had a bad game the last time."
The Lady Bulldogs were 8-7-2 after Fridays game. They finished the regular season with a loss against Northville, 2-1, on Monday.
"We are really playing well as a team," Travis said. "We are playing consistent as a team. This is a great group of girls."
The Class C Section II tournament begins this week and the seedings were announced on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, the 14th-seeded team, will play at Galway on Friday at 3 p.m.
"We have a stronger team going into sectionals," Travis said. "You can’t count us out this year."
