Driver fell asleep, then crashed on Altamont-Voorheesville Road, police say

GUILDERLAND — On Friday, Aug. 18, at about 11:47 p.m., Denise C. Johnsen of 60 Pheasant Run in Voorheesville crashed her vehicle in the area of 927 Altamont-Voorheesville Road, said Guilderland Deputy Police Chief Curtis Cox this week. A portion of the road was closed until about 10 a.m. the next day.

“She appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel,” Cox said.

Cox said that events unfolded this way: Johnsen, 43, was traveling northwest on Route 156 when she crossed over into the oncoming lane and went off the road. Her 2008 Hyundai hit a utility pole, then slid into a ditch and stopped when it hit a culvert. The car came to rest on the driver’s side door, Cox said.

The vehicle was pulled from the ditch by a towing company, which made it possible to extricate Johnsen from the car, Cox said.

Johnsen complained of back pain and was taken to Albany Medical Center, he said.

No tickets were issued, Cox said.
