Car flips after New Year's eve drinking

GUILDERLAND — In the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, a car veered off the road and became airborne, crashing on Settles Hill Road; the driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Daniel J. Bowman, 41, was driving his 2014 Audi 8 southeast at 3:15 a.m. on Settles Hill Road, where he lives, when he lost control of the car, which overturned and landed on its roof, according to police.

According to the Guilderland Police report, Bowman was speeding, and, when the car left the road, it came to rest in a wooded area.

When officers arrived, a passenger in the vehicle stated that Bowman, who was lying on his back on the side of the road, had been driving, and had been drinking.

“I knew he drank too much and was going way too fast. I kept telling him to slow down but he just kept going faster,” the passenger said, according to the report.

Bowman told the officer, “I’ve been drinking, and was stupid and drove,” the police report said.

Bowman had a cut under his chin and complained of head and back pain.

The Altamont Rescue Squad responded to the scene, and, in the ambulance, Bowman told the medic he could not remember where he was driving from and that the last thing he remembered was watching the ball drop at midnight.

While in the ambulance, Bowman gave two breath samples, and registered blood alcohol contents of .128 and .15. A blood sample was also taken, according to a press release from the Guilderland Police Department; toxicology reports are still pending.

Bowman and his two passengers were transferred to Albany Medical Center and Ellis Hospital for mild injuries, the release said.
