Serious discovery: As part of the Schoharie Valley farm to School Project, Middleburgh Elementary School students on Oct. 24 learn from Anne Rogan, right, a professor at the State University of New York college of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, about the sugar content of some of their favorite processed foods and drinks. Those foods were compared with “real foods,” such as vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, with minimal or no processing. Anne Rogan, PhD, RD CDN, continued teaching about how to read labels to assess the sugar content of the food item to the next group of students.

On National Food Day, Oct. 24, this student at Middleburgh Elementary School places a lesson evaluation in a box covered with smiley faces. The tool was designed by Farm to School Project coordinator Regina Tillman to assess the effectiveness of the hour-long interactive session to teach kids in third through sixth grades about healthy eating.
