Public is invited to celebrate the NANOvember series of outreach and educational events

The Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at SUNY Polytechnic Institute is planning for the seventh annual celebration of NANOvember. The month-long series of events will highlight nanoscale science-related educational, business, and workforce opportunities.

NANOvember will kickoff with SUNY Poly’s Community Day on Saturday, Nov. 1, and for the second year in a row, will feature open-house programs in three SUNY Poly locations — in Albany, Utica, and Rochester.

At the CNSE Albany NanoTech Complex, participants will be able to take part in hands-on activities, demonstrations, and guided tours of the new Tech Valley High School as well as NanoFab Xtension, headquarters of the Global 450mm Consortium, which is creating the next-generation platform for the development of faster, more cost-effective computer chips.

Additionally, a number of events will take place during NANOvember for the first time, including:

— Nov. 15: “Girl Scouts Nano Discovery Day,” in which CNSE will partner with the Girl Scouts to introduce young girls to the world of nanotechnology and encourage them to find success in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields where women are typically underrepresented. After completing a number of nanoscale science-based activities, the girls will be awarded patches for their participation;

— Nov. 22: “Family Day” at the CNSE Children’s Museum of Science and Technology, where children will be able to experience age-appropriate nanotechnology exhibits and other family-based, hands-on activities, including the chance to hear a science-centered story and explore concepts related to size by using a tiny ruler and scented balloons. At this free event, children and their families will also be able to engage in activities that showcase nature-inspired applications of nanotechnology.

In addition, on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Albany NanoCollege, SUNY Poly Chief Executive Officer and Officer in Charge Alain Kaloyeros will discuss nanotechnology’s growing impact on New York State — and society.
