NEW SCOTLAND — A fire on Friday afternoon destroyed the home at 492 Font Grove Rd., leaving a 91-year-old man in critical condition.

Nazzerine Donato suffered severe burns to his upper body and face, according to a release from the Albany County Sheriff’s Department.

The release says that events unfolded this way:

The fire was reported at about 12:28 p.m. on Dec. 29. When deputies arrived on scene, the home was fully in flames, and Donato was next to his burning home with extensive burn injuries to his upper body.

Paramedics treated Donato on the scene before he was flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Hospital, which specializes in burn treatment.

Donato’s dog, which was also near the home with burn injuries, was taken by deputies to the Delmar Animal Hospital, where it had to be euthanized.

The home was a total loss; an investigation into what started the fire is ongoing, but it is believed the fire spread from a woodstove in the home.

These agencies helped: the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, Albany County Criminal Investigations Unit, Albany County Emergency Management Office, Albany County Emergency Medical Services, the New York State Police, the New Scotland Fire Department, the Onesquethaw Fire Department, the Voorheesville Fire Department, the Bethlehem Fire Department, the East Berne Fire Department, and the Slingerlands Fire Department.

Albany County lists the property at 492 Font Grove Rd. — a house with five acres — at a full-market value of $188,300 and says it is owned by the estate of Joseph Donato.
