Free throw championship open to kids ages 9 to 14

GUILDERLAND — All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2017 Knights of Columbus Jason Brown Memorial Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, with a makeup date of Jan. 14.

The event will be held at the Christ the King Parish gym on Sumpter Avenue, which is three blocks east of Route 155 off Western Avenue. Registration and warm-ups will begin at 5:30 p.m. The contest starts at 6 p.m. Refreshments, pizza, and certificates will be provided free to all the participants.

The Jason Brown Free Throw Championship is sponsored locally by the Guilderland Knights of Columbus. Winners will progress through district and state competitions. A national champion will be decided at the United States Military Academy at West Point in March.

Zachary Barr from Guilderland competed at West Point in 2012 and won the New York State Championship.

Divisions are based on competitor’s ages as of Jan. 1, 2017. Last year, more than 225,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,200 local competitions.

Participants are required to furnish proof of age with a copy of their birth certificate and written parental consent. Entry forms will be provided during registration before the competition. For more information, call Ed Pierce at (518) 469-4803.
