VOORHEESVILLE — Among the tennis courts and playgrounds in the village park, there may soon be a venue for the skateboarding set.
"I heard rumblings of having some kind of a skate park," said Dominick Campana, a Voorheesville parent who came to last week’s village board meeting, with children in tow. His kids skateboard and he’d like to see a place for them to do it, that’s out of the road.
"The board would really like to see someone take charge of this," said Mayor Robert Conway. The village isn’t sure how much interest there is for a skateboarding park, he said, and the board of trustees would like to find out before starting construction. The cost was estimated between $20,000 and $30,000 at July’s village board meeting. Surface leveling and fencing were determined to be the biggest costs, a drainage system could also be expensive, but the cost of the equipment itself can range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Collecting donations for equipment would be one way to ease the burden, suggested Campana. Trustee and recreation liaison, David Cardona, added that skateboard-icon Tony Hawk has a foundation that helps supply skateboard equipment.
"I’d love to get together with a lot of parents," said Cardona, as part of an effort to gauge interest and brainstorm ideas for financing the park.

Other business

In other business, the board:

— Voted unanimously to accept the low bids from contractors for work on updating and expanding the firehouse. For general construction, the lowest bid came from Dutch Valley General Contractors, which offered a base bid of $526,642. For mechanical construction, Family Danz had the lowest bid, $90,459. The plumbing construction contract went to TML inc., which bid $43,900. Brunswick Construction will be doing the electric construction for $89,392. Trustee Richard Berger said that work is expected to start by the first week in January;

— Voted unanimously to make Trustee Jack Stevens the signatory for the firehouse project. He is authorized to sign for up to $1,500 without board approval.

— Announced that the village holiday party will be held on Dec. 19, after the village board meeting; and

— Entered into executive session to discuss litigation matters. Conway told The Enterprise afterwards that no formal actions were taken.
