GUILDERLAND — A four-vehicle accident on Western Avenue last week put two Altamont men in the hospital after one of them had to be extricated from his vehicle. An investigation by the Guilderland Police Department is ongoing.

William Zimmerman, 52, from Altamont, was driving east on Route 20, on Thursday, Nov. 12, when he thought he saw a car moving into his lane, and swerved, according to Captain Curtis Cox of the Guilderland Police. Zimmerman swerved too far, said Cox, and his Ford F150 struck a Chevy truck head-on. The Chevy was driven by Timothy Taylor, 25, of Altamont, who was heading west on Route 20.

The accident occurred at 6:39 p.m. near the intersection of Western Avenue and Westmere Terrace.

Zimmerman’s truck also collided with a second vehicle, driven by Brian Cranker, 26, of Altamont. Taylor’s truck, after being struck by Zimmerman, hit a vehicle driven by Marian Schafer, 51, of Latham, according to Cox.

Taylor had to be extricated from his truck. Emergency responders on the scene included the Westmere Fire Department, Guilderland Emergency Medical Services, the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad, and the State University of New York’s Five Quad Ambulance Service, said Cox.

Zimmerman and Taylor were taken to Albany Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Taylor is still at Albany Medical Center, and was in fair condition yesterday, according to a public relations spokesperson for the hospital; she said she had no record on Zimmerman.

Cox said the investigation is still open, although Zimmerman has been issued a ticket for crossing the yellow line. Asked if alcohol or drugs were involved, Cox said that is part of the investigation.
