Help us stop the burglaries

GUILDERLAND — Police are asking for residents’ help in preventing further burglaries in town after a recent crime spree.

At least 10 to 12 burglaries have been reported throughout the town in the past few months, all with similar patterns, according to Captain Curtis Cox of the Guilderland Police Department.

The crimes have mainly occurred during daytime hours, when residents are typically at work. The first burglaries took place in the area of Fort Hunter, but some have now been reported in Guilderland Center.

The thefts have been of small items, such as jewelry, cash, and electronic equipment.

“Nobody has seen the perpetrators, although people have reported possible vehicles,” Cox said. The police department wants residents throughout the town to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and report it immediately.

A common tactic for burglars, according a release sent out by the department, is to knock on the door first to see if anyone is home.

“If someone knocks on your door and seems surprised when you answer or doesn’t seem to have a valid reason for being in the area, call 9-1-1 as soon as possible,” the release said.

Police are also urging residents to protect their own properties.

“There have been some forced entries, but some houses have had unlocked doors,” said Cox. Security systems would be beneficial, or, Cox suggested, leave a radio on at a low volume to make it seem like someone is home. Most importantly, he said, always keep the doors locked.
