Morey collared for statutory rape

NEW SCOTLAND — John P. Morey, 28, of Fultonville was arrested on Monday for having sex with a 15-year-old New Scotland girl, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic dispute about a week ago, Undersheriff Craig Apple said yesterday, and one of the people involved “indicated we may want to speak to this girl.”  Police interviewed the alleged victim who identified Morey and another man.

“Both men are in their late 20s [and] both of them work for the victim’s father,” Apple said.  He described their work as manual labor.

Morey was arrested after he came to the police station for questioning, Apple said, and the other man, who is currently in a drug rehabilitation program, is expected to be arrested soon.

The sexual contact, which had been going on for the last five months, happened separately between the girl and each man, Apple said.

“It’s kind of a cut and dry case,” Apple said.  “He befriended her and basically started having sex with her… She basically didn’t know what to do.”

Morey is charged with five felony counts of third-degree rape, five felony counts of third-degree criminal sexual acts, and five misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the sheriff’s department.

He was arraigned in New Scotland Town Court by Judge Margaret Adkins and remanded to Albany County’s jail without bail.  A preliminary hearing has been set for Nov. 12.
