Man falls to his death in Westerlo

WESTERLO — Roof work led to a fatal plunge this week for a man from Loudonville.

David Hayes Sr., 71, was at the house of his son, David, in Westerlo on Monday, when he fell from scaffolding, police say.

Police and paramedics arrived at 6283 Route 32 at 11 a.m. in response to a 911 call, reporting that a man had fallen from the roof, according to a release from the Albany County Sheriff’s Department.

“He was found unresponsive with apparent trauma to his head,” the release says. A family member told the police that he “fell from scaffolding, initially striking his head on a wooden plank and then landing on a concrete floor.”

The Westerlo Rescue Squad transported Hayes to Albany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m.

Investigation of the accident is ongoing.
