Our dear friend, Jack Long, will be missed at every turn
To the Editor:
Thank you, Tim Tulloch, for writing such a warm and wonderful tribute to Jack Long! You captured the spirit of this great man.
He could redesign and construct a new water and sewage system to keep his town healthy and protect the environment — and he also performed countless small acts of service to keep our traditional dance and music community thriving, such as bringing jugs of pure Rensselaerville water to barn dances to refresh the dancers.
When I returned to the Capital District 16 years ago, I looked for people who love to sing and dance. Jack was a welcoming presence and helped connect me and countless others to activities in our area. Craig Palmer, who has been coordinating setup and cleanup for the Flurry Festival for years, said of Jack's strong role at the festival, "Jack got the job done!"
This summer, Jack made forays out from the nursing home with friends to collect components for structures at the Old Sings Festival — only Jack had all the tools to assemble the infrastructure others depend on — and he had arranged storage of various parts needed only once a year. He quietly made sure this legacy was passed on.
Though he was fading, we read jokes to Jack from the treasure trove friends had sent for his 80th birthday — and he smiled at every punchline.
Our dear friend will be missed at every turn — and he’ll also be with us in spirit and through his work to construct the meeting spaces and weave the threads of community for all who enjoy traditional music and dance, and bad jokes!
