BERNE — Longtime Town Clerk Patricia Favreau is unopposed this year, for a post she has held since 1980. She is also the town’s deputy tax collector and marriage officer.

“It’s a job where you can never be bored,” Favreau said.

Favreau has lived in Berne since 1943. A graduate of Berne-Knox Central School, she went on to study at the New York State College for Teachers at Albany.

She received her certification as a registered municipal clerk at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.

“Of course, I feel that education is key,” Favreau said this week, “and that’s why I’ve been involved with the New York State Town Clerks Association since its inception, which provides education and courses for professional development.”

She is also a charter member of the Berne Youth Council, she said.

Favreau told The Enterprise this week that her duties have multiplied over the years.

“In addition to being the regular licenser, I do handicap parking permits, and I’m a notary, and I provide the transfer-station permits,” Favreau said. “I do the cable TV announcements, post website notices, schedule the use of the town park, I coordinate with community caregivers on the use of the senior van, and I’m the editor of the newsletter.”

The biggest challenge of being Berne’s town clerk is “keeping up with all of the changes in state agency regulations,” Favreau said.

The question she is most frequently asked by town residents, she said, is what hours the transfer station is open. The hours are as follows: Mondays, from 4 to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, from noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The transfer station is closed on holidays.

“I get phone calls all the time asking me for different phone numbers,” Favreau went on. “I also get a lot of tax questions, and questions about marriage licenses.”

The best way to reach Favreau is by phone at home or at her office in Town Hall during the following hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evenings. She also works from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
