Pair nabbed in jewelry theft

NEW SCOTLAND — Sheriff’s deputies arrested Tina Civitello and Meagan Murdza for stealing $6,300 worth of gold jewelry from an acquaintance’s house.

Civitello, 18, of 2207 Guilderland Ave., Rotterdam, and Murdza, 22, of 146 Sheridan Ave., Albany, had dropped by their acquaintance’s house on Bullock Road in New Scotland, acting Sheriff Craig Apple said this week.

The homeowner had noticed one of the women coming out of a bedroom at one point, but thought nothing of it at the time, Apple said.  Later, the homeowner noticed that jewelry was missing, made some calls, and, ultimately, called the police, who were able to easily trace the jewelry to two Rotterdam pawn shops — Jewels in Rotterdam Square Mall and Regency Jewelers on Altamont Avenue, Apple said.

Some of the jewelry was returned to its owner, but some of the gold had already been melted down, Apple said.

Civitello and Murdza were charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony.  They were arraigned in New Scotland Town Court and remanded to Albany County’s jail with $10,000 bail.
