Guilderland boys soccer vs Averill Park

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland boys’ soccer team is on a little roll as the season begins to wind down.

The Dutchmen have won three straight games including Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Averill Park on a dreary, drizzly day in Guilderland.
"I don’t have much to say; we played pretty well," said Guilderland Coach Mike Kinnally. "We knocked it around and I was able to put people in. Our turnovers were cut by 25 percent."

The Dutchmen are now 8-5 overall but have a tough stretch of games coming up, including a make-up game with Niskayuna.

The Dutchmen play Colonie on Saturday; Shaker on Tuesday; Ballston Spa on Thursday; and Saratoga on Saturday, Oct. 22, to wrap up the regular season.
"I wouldn’t be shocked if we beat any of those teams," Kinnally said. "Colonie will be tough."
"Colonie, at home on Saturday, it will be a festive atmosphere," Kinnally added.

On Tuesday, the Dutchmen dominated play and had many opportunities to score. Guilderland had 26 shots to just two shots by Averill Park.

The Dutch also took 13 corner kicks in the Averill Park end.
"We were moving the ball well," Kinnally said. "I wouldn’t be happy if we scored six goals against a bad keeper or had a couple that trickled in. We had a good work rate to get the ball into an area to finish. I’m happy with the work rate to get the ball in."

Guilderland got two goals in the first half and two in the second.

The first tally came off the foot of Chris Conway. He used his speed to beat defenders and took a pass from Greg Murphy to get the goal.

The second goal came with 36:02 left in the half.

Mike Camardo scored with an assist from Kelly Young.

Camardo scored his second goal of the game in the second half. Frank Campagnano kicked the ball over the Averill Park defense and Camardo was able to run down the ball and finished his shot to give the Dutch a 3-0 lead.

Conway scored the final goal of the day for the Dutch.

Nick Stark blasted a shot that hit off the right post. But the ball bounced to Conway who kicked it into the goal.

Senior Barry Kinlan played the entire game in goal, but only had to make two saves.

"One game at a time"

The Averill Park win follows wins over Saratoga and Columbia. Guilderland beat Saratoga and their great goalie Warren Gross, 1-0, and then beat Columbia, 2-1.
"It should have been 3-0," Kinnally said of Columbia. "But it was 50/50 in terms of possession."

It took a well-placed shot by Camardo to beat Saratoga.

The Dutch have a goal of finishing at least .500 this year and it looks promising with five games remaining.
"We want to get to 10 wins," Kinnally said. "We are taking it one game at a time. We are capable of beating any team and we are capable of losing to any team. We’re taking it step by step."

Getting to .500 with a young team will be a big step for rebuilding the program back to prominence.
"It’s a plan," Kinnally said. "It’s not just last year or this year. It’s for three or four years. It’s no doubt that we are getting there. We’ll be returning eight starters. We’ll be getting ready for next year right after the season. We’ll start lifting in November and get the kids bigger and stronger."
