Vote ‘yes’ on Voorheesville pool repairs

To the Editor:

I just read the article from last week’s edition, “V’ville school pool repairs will go to public vote” and would like to share some additional information. The pool is used for so much more than what was disclosed in the article.

The pool is used by both the girls’ and boys’ varsity swim and dive teams.  It is used to offer Learn-to-Swim classes for children of all ages, not just from Voorheesville, but from near by communities.

The Learn-To-Swim program provides job opportunities for many of our students both as instructors and lifeguards during the school year and summer.

It also is used by our adult continuing-education programs, including programs for our senior citizens.  It is used to teach middle school students how to swim as part of our physical education program. It is used for our students’ enjoyment during most of our monthly middle school teen nights.

It is used by our physics classes for their project to construct the best boat out of cardboard and the subsequent race across the pool.  Finally, there are other members of the community that use the pool, for example, Boy Scouts to earn badges and New York State Police for training.

I would also like to add something on a personal note.  Both of my daughters who have since graduated were members of the girls’ varsity swim and dive team, and were employed by the school district as lifeguards and Learn-To-Swim instructors.

Over the past eight to 10 years, they taught so many children how to swim. They both got to experience (and enjoyed) working with children, so much in fact that my eldest daughter is now studying to become a teacher.

The pool is an asset to our school and the community and I hope on Nov. 17 my neighbors vote “yes” for the repairs.
