Hours should be extended. Berne library a source of pride

To the Editor:

The following letter was sent to the Berne Town Board. The town’s library board is seeking funds to extend the hours it is open. Currently it is open only 25 hours.

I imagine when you drive past our new library you give yourselves a pat on the back, and it is well deserved. There would be no library there if not for your efforts and support.

As a former trustee and constant borrower, I think it is the best thing in town. We have a great group of people who run it and they always go out of their way to help when patrons need information or materials only to be found outside of what is available to us within the Upper Hudson Library System. The programs offered match those that are offered at much larger libraries.

I was really surprised when I learned that all this is able to be done with only $17 of my tax money. In this day and age, that is a steal.

Then I learned that with only a few more dollars the library could be open more hours.

It would be a boon to many people particularly the elderly in town, to be able to go to the library when it is still light in the winter months.

Our town may be small but our library is a source of pride for all who live here. I certainly would be happy to contribute more to secure that service for all our patrons both adults and children.
