Ellen Trossbach
SCHUYLERVILLE — Ellen “Billie” Louise Trossbach, a United States Coast Guard veteran, died on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2015, at her son’s home surrounded by her loved ones, after a brief illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Trossbach was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on June 24, 1923, the daughter of the late Veronica G. (née Guinan) and Kyle M. Ferguson, of Albany.
She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Albany in 1942 and attended Mildred Elley Business School.
She was one of the few women, according to her family, who served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II, in Boston, Massachusetts, and Miami, Florida.
After the war, she worked at the New York State’s Department of Conservation, and the state’s Department of Transportation. She retired in 1982.
She and her late husband, Charles Trossbach, moved to North Point, Florida, after her retirement, and lived there until 2011, “enjoying life and making many friends,” wrote her family in a tribute.
Mrs. Trossbach enjoyed playing bingo, and caring for her son, “Chick”, in Florida, after his car accident in 1986.
“Billie had a remarkable zest for life that was easily noticed by anyone who met her, leaving her mark in all of our hearts,” wrote her family.
She is survived by her five sons, Charles “Chick” Trossbach, and his wife, Margaret, of Albany, James Trossbach, and his wife, Sharon, of East Berne, David Trossbach, and his wife, Barbara, of Westerlo, Paul Trossbach, and his wife, Valerie, of Preston Hollow, and Robert Trossbach, and his wife, Colleen, of Schuylerville; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, her sister, Rita Doerr, died before her, as did her son, Alan Trossbach, of Clarksville.
A funeral was held on Sept. 16 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Guilderland and burial followed at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Arrangements were by the Flynn Brothers Funeral Home in Schuylerville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga and Washington County, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
