Soccer Guilderland girls vs Amsterdam

GUILDERLAND — It was an offensive explosion.

The Guilderland girls’ soccer team scored seven goals to roll past Amsterdam, 7-0, in a non-league soccer game on Monday at Don Snyder Field.

The Lady Dutch got four goals from sophomore Jackie DeLuise to speed by the Amsterdam Rams of the Big 10.
"It was nice to see Jackie explode," said Guilderland Coach Barb Newton. "We had quite a few opportunities. We needed it for morale boosters. It’s a good thing."

DeLuise scored the first four goals of the game. Three came in the first half.

The first goal came with 30:38 left in the opening half. DeLuise got a pass from Kayla Best, beat a couple of Amsterdam defenders, and chipped a shot over the goalie as she came out to stop DeLuise and the ball.

DeLuise’s second goal came off her head with 22:57 left until halftime.

Hannah Rosen lofted a ball in front of the goal and DeLuise put her head on it and directed it toward the goal to put the Lady Dutch up 2-0.

DeLuise’s third goal was all effort. She got the ball and dribbled through the defense, then fired a shot that found the back of the net and put Guilderland up 3-0 with 21:43 left until halftime.

DeLuise’s scoring continued into the second half. She scored her fourth goal of the contest with 37:48 left in the game and capped an amazing day of offense.
"It was nice to see Jackie step in and do very well," Newton reiterated. "She had one where she chipped it hard over the goalie; one where she bulled through three players; and one off her head. She was really scrappy and that is difficult to teach."

More goals

The Lady Dutch weren’t finished scoring on the day, though.

They scored less than a minute later on a play off the head of ninth-grader Danielle Tetreault.

Best kicked the ball on a re-start and lofted the ball in front of the goal where Tetreault got her head on it and directed it into the goal.

Devon Rosenberry added to the scoring for the Lady Dutch. She scored with 30:46 left in the game after getting a nice pass in front of the goal from Krystal Myers.

Abbey Fashour scored the final goal of the contest for Guilderland.

Julie Malkowski played the entire game in goal for Guilderland, but didn’t see much action in recording the shutout.

Malkowski was supposed to split time with Jen Mihok in goal this season, but has played well enough to keep Mihok as the last line of defense at her sweeper position.

Despite the offensive explosion, Newton says that her players could improve on some things as they head into the Suburban Council portion of the season.
"Overall, it was not a beautifully-played game," the coach said. "Our defense got sloppy and that’s not acceptable. There were times, about three times, they had pressure and we were able to get out of it."

Newton said that she was happy with the play off corner kicks and re-start kicks — direct or indirect after fouls — and that was one of the things the Dutch wanted to work on.
"We had a re-start from about 30 yards out," Newton said. "And Tetreault headed it in. That goal was nice and we need to capitalize on those."

Attitude

The win bumps the Lady Dutch’s record to 3-1 overall. They had beaten Scotia-Glenville High School, 3-1, and Mohonasen, 4-0, before dropping a game to Bethlehem, 4-2, on Friday.
"It’s a great start," Newton said. "Our goal is to get to the sectional final. We are playing with an attitude and that should help us when we mix it up with Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, and Burnt Hills. The team believes they can do it."

Newton said, that even in the loss, her team played well.
"We out-shot them but lost 4-2," Newton said. "It was a solid game for us. We had opportunities to score."

Guilderland opened league play with a trip to Averill Park on Wednesday. Guilderland then will play at Ballston Spa on Friday and host Shenendehowa, the defending state champion, on Tuesday.
"Ballston Spa is always a physical game," Newton said. "It’s a good way to go into the league. We want to go 3-0 this week. Shen has top-quality players, but I think we can keep up with them. We have the attitude this year that we can play with them."
