County sets up hotline for Dreamers

Albany County has set up a hotline for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients to call for assistance from the county’s Regional Immigration Assistance Center.

Effective Sept. 13, the toll-free number 1-833-DREAMRS (1-833-373-2677) is for those seeking guidance on the termination of the DACA program, application information, and renewals.

On Sept. 5, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Obama-era DACA program would be rescinded. Under the new policy, the Department of Homeland Security said it will no longer accept new DACA applications and will stop accepting renewal requests as of Oct. 5.

DACA, established in June 2012, allowed some people who came to the United States illegally as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from being deported as well as eligibility for a work permit. About 800,000 people are currently enrolled in the program and are often referred to as Dreamers, an acronym for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act.
