Global farming

About two dozen delegates from agriculture departments around the world made a stop at the Luhrmans’ farm in the town of Wright recently.  Organized by the Department of State, the visitors toured other area farms; the Luhrmans’ Community Supported Agriculture operation was the smallest.

Raymond Luhrman and his wife, Sarah, explained how the system works, with people buying shares for a season’s worth of vegetables before the harvesting begins.  Karl Westphal, who sold land from his farm to the Luhrmans, warned the group about issues that have developed around large-scale agribusiness

Members of the international delegation asked some questions, but mostly took in the rural scenery and short lectures regarding organic growing methods and renewable energy sources.
