Let’s keep the village’s quaint Victorian charm

To the Editor:

As a long-time resident of Altamont, I would like to keep our village with no more expansion of Stewart’s.

I do use Stewarts’ all the time and I am glad they are here in the community. I just don’t see the need for further expansion. It works very well as it is.

My family came to Altamont in 1939 so I have seen the Stewarts’ site go through many changes. When we came, the original building there had been built in the 1700s — even before Altamont “was.”

It was “Seversons Tap” which was a tavern and way stop to the mountains plus it was the West Guilderland post office.

With Altamont developing, the post office was moved to Maple Avenue and with Prohibition the tavern was made a residence.

We had become a quiet country village with quaint Victorian charm. We can’t go back in time but we can help keep our community’s residential quality as it is now. I can hope that our village officials feel the same way.

I will be at the Sept. 1 board meeting to express my opinion.

As a comment on the traffic problem at Stewarts’ corner, the only real solution is some kind of traffic light with an auxiliary warning light around the bend on the “new hill road,” down the hill into the village.

Since this is a state road, the Department of Transportation needs to be pressured. Five corners are always going to be a problem.
