Rochelle Kuhar counts cash at her and her husband’s restaurant in Rensselaerville. A fundraiser will be held for her as she battles the “ninja mutant brain tumor.”

RENSSELAERVILLE — When Rochelle Kuhar was hit with the news of her diagnosis, she and her husband, Micah, deemed her a “warrior princess,” fighting the “ninja mutant brain tumor.”

Kuhar works as a sixth-grade math teacher at the Greenville School District. She also owns, with her husband, a farm and a restaurant in Rensselaerville, the Kuhar Family Farm and Market.

On Thursday, their restaurant’s Facebook page included an update on Kuhar’s diagnosis: “My tumor is very rare.... papillary craniopharyngioma!,” it said. “I signed up for the clinical trial — I’ll start in a few weeks. I feel very positive.”

Papillary craniopharyngioma is a rare type of non-cancerous tumor.

To raise money to help alleviate the cost of treatment, an event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Shell Inn on Route 85 in Westerlo. Admission will be $25, said Aline Galgay, who is organizing the fundraiser.

“I know Rochelle and Micah very well,” said Galgay, who worked as their attorney when they were starting their business and when they moved to a new location. Galgay also works as the town of Westerlo’s attorney. She said she started organizing the fundraiser when she first heard of the diagnosis.

“I was just hit really hard by it … ,” she said. “They’re young, they’re vibrant, they’re part of our community.”

Ed Reinhardt, the owner of the Shell Inn, is donating the dining-room space, said Galgay. There will be a cash bar — though the bar will remain open to the public — and an auction where bidders will buy tickets for a chance at winning items.

One item up for auction had already sold 30 tickets by Aug. 16, said Galgay. A local man who owns a home in Vieques, Puerto Rico, is offering a stay at the home for a week in the 2018-19 season. Local artists have also put up their art for a silent auction, she said.

There will also be four different local bands or musicians playing at the inn, she said; the Barefoot Ladies, Eric Fernandez, the Red Haired Strangers, and 30 Rack.

Galgay said she also has ordered rubber bracelets for the event with Kuhar’s new moniker in mind, bearing the words “Warrior Princess.”
