Caucus was not coronation

To the Editor:

The first caucus I attended in Knox, over 20 years ago, was a much different meeting than the one that took place this past Monday night at Town Hall.  There may have been a dozen people attending, it lasted no more than five minutes, and was essentially a coronation of a slate of candidates for the party line.

Monday night's Democratic caucus had 73 attendees, lasted over a half-hour, and, most importantly, represented a variety of support for competing candidates.  I applaud the efforts of all of the candidates and their supporters in bringing the largest attendance to a caucus in Knox to the best of my recollection.

This accomplishment is a tribute to the personal efforts of all who attended, making the time to contribute to the democratic process. Past efforts that have included newspaper postings, public and fundraising events have never resulted in attracting such participation.

I want to thank and commend all who participated in our caucus, and hope that this may become a springboard event that will spur more participation in our social and civic gatherings.
