Highway crew hits mis-marked gas line
GUILDERLAND — Windingbrook Drive was closed for 11 hours on Monday after the town’s highway department struck a gas line that caused a leak.
A town highway department crew was working to repair a sewer drain when it hit a main line around 9:30 a.m., according to Captain Curtis Cox of the Guilderland Police Department.
Cox said the line had been marked by the New York State Electric and Gas Company under the Dig Safely New York program, but the markings were not in the correct place.
“I don’t think that’s unusual,” said Cox.
NYSEG could not be reached for comment.
National Grid was contacted and immediately responded to the scene to fix the line, he said.
Police officers and firefighters were dispatched to secure the area and make sure there was no traffic driving through and that nearby buildings were not infiltrated with excessive levels of gas.
“Natural gas is lighter than air and it usually dissipates quickly, plus there is the added smell that gives you a warning,” said Cox, who noted that there were no injuries or illnesses related to the leak.
Windingbrook Drive was reopened to traffic at 8:30 p.m. on Monday night.
