BPD charge two in counterfeit case
BETHLEHEM — A woman whom, police say, had just been released on bail for robbery cases in New York City was charged here on Tuesday with 10 felony counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument when counterfeit bills were found in her car along with police uniforms.
The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the United States Secret Service.
A release from the Bethlehem Police Department says that events unfolded this way:
On July 31, at about 2:30 p.m., Bethlehem Police got a call from the Delmar CVS, saying a woman was trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills to purchase gift cards. She left the store, and its employees provided information on her car.
Bethlehem Police stopped the car on Delaware Avenue at the Albany City line. Madelyn Garcia, 18, and Anthony C. Caldwell, of the Bronx were arrested. Inside the car, police found 30 counterfeit $100 bills, one counterfeit $20 bill, a bullet-proof vest, and police uniforms. Bethlehem Police also located two counterfeit $100 bills at the Delmar CVS.
Caldwell and Garcia were each charged with 10 felony counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Garcia was also charged with attempted petit larceny, a misdemeanor. Caldwell was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, a misdemeanor, and with driving with tinted windows, a violation. Additional charges are pending.
Garcia and Caldwell were both arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court by Judge Andrew Kirby. Garcia was remanded to the Albany County’s jail without bail, because of the robbery cases in New York City. Caldwell was remanded to Albany County’s jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. They are scheduled to return to Bethlehem Court on Friday, Aug. 3, at 9:30 a.m.
Bethlehem Police are continuing their investigation into the police uniforms and what other stores the pair had been to prior to the CVS in Delmar. Anyone with information on the subjects is asked to call Bethlehem Police at 518-439-9973.
