ALTAMONT — A Schenectady resident has been remanded to Albany County’s jail for burglary in the village.

Just after 1 a.m. on June 29, James Allen of Nott Street in Schenectady broke into the Subway sandwich shop at the Altamont Corners on Main Street, according to a release from the Altamont Police.

“The door was locked. He actually broke into the store and was able to shut off the alarm,” said John Hurley, Subway Development’s Director of Operations for the Capital District.

After entering the shop, Allen stole the register drawer and cash box, taking a total of $446.86 with him and causing a bit of damage along the way, the release said.

“When he ripped the drawer out, he did it quickly, damaging the cord that connects the register to the touch-screen monitor used for sales,” Hurley said. “We got lucky because the computer still works. It could have been a lot worse.”

Allen was arrested the following night at 1613 Albany Street in Schenectady and was charged with burglary in the third degree, petit larceny, and criminal mischief in the fourth degree.

Public Safety Commissioner Anthony Salerno declined to comment on the case.
