Another school year has come and gone and the achievements of the local athletes have been stored away in their memory banks.

Here is one last look at how the teams and athletes of Guilderland, Voorheesville, and Berne-Knox-Westerlo high schools did this past year.

This week The Enterprise will recap the fall season and next week the winter and spring sport seasons will be reviewed.

Fall sports

Cross-country

Cross-country continued to be the most successful fall sport.

Guilderland’s Brian Rhodes-Devey won the state championship running the 3.5 miles in 15:25.7, edging out Steve Murdock of Saratoga at the finish line.

Guilderland senior Seth Dubois finished ninth at the state meet in 15:39.7.

Travis DeRusso of Berne-Knox-Westerlo finished 10th in the Class C state meet in a time of 16:35.6. He was the third finisher from Section II.

The Voorheesville girls’ team finished sixth overall after winning the Class C Section II title the week before. The Lady Blackbirds were led by Hillary Edmunds and Chantal Little. Alison Vogelein, Kali Votraw, Jessica Brown, Zoe Edmunds, and Elizabeth Dawson also competed for the Blackbirds.

Mackey Lloyd was the top runner for the Voorheesville boys’ team last fall.

BKW’s Ada Lauterbach won the Class C individual title but finished 53rd overall at the state meet.

Football

The Voorheesville football team had one of its best seasons in recent memory. The Blackbirds won the Southern Division of Class C and advanced to the Section II semifinals where they lost to nemesis Schuylerville at Thomas Buckley Field.

The Birds were led by quarterback Andy Catellier, wide receiver and defensive back Nick Duncan, running back P.J. Hognestad, and lineman Eric Dickson. Justin Lupien, Charlie McGrail, George Ward, Charles Langsburg, Sean Hognestad, Steve Cardinal, and Tim Robinson had big seasons for the Blackbirds.

The Guilderland team was under new leadership as Dan Penna took over the head coaching duties from Pete Schwan.

The Dutch struggled for most of the season but won their last two games and finished the season with three wins in all. The Dutchmen beat Ballston Spa, Schenectady, and Queensbury.

Guilderland was led by senior running backs Kevin Doherty and Tim Montgomery, both first-year varsity players. Seniors Bill Rafferty, Austin Elliot, Chris Wolfe, Judd Robinson, and John D’Ambrosio had good seasons for Guilderland.

The Dutch also returned young talented players in Peter Stanish, Paul Booker, Scott Raffensperger, Kyle Hussey, Nick Zanotta, Curtis Lloyd, Kevin Forbes, and Joe Lima.

Soccer

The Voorheesville boys’ soccer team had another successful season as it won the Colonial Council title and advanced to the finals of the Class B Section II tournament.

But the Blackbirds lost to Chatham in the final and missed a chance to repeat as champions.

The Blackbirds were led by seniors Greg Klopfer, Matt Belgiovine, Tom Cavanaugh, Greg Jones, Kyle Hatch, Jeff Bode, and Lee Dudek. The Birds also had talented underclassmen in Lee Fenner, Matt Miller, Dominic Venditti, and Joe and Kevin Klembczyk.

The Guilderland boys’ soccer team continued to improve under third-year coach Mike Kinally. The Dutchmen advanced to the Class AA Section II quarterfinal match and gave a scare to the top-seed Bethlehem. Guilderland held a 1-0 lead with three minutes left in the contest but the Eagles scored two goals to win the game.

The Dutchmen were led by seniors Mike Camardo, David Herkenham, Kousha Navidar, Nick Stark, and Kelly Young. Underclassmen Frank Campagnano, Phil Cassidy, Chris Conway, Jordan DuBose, Kyle Klapp, Greg Murphy, Kyle Tassone, and Uriah Myrie were major contributors to the team.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo boys’ soccer team suffered from inexperience during the fall. The Bulldogs only had six seniors on its 18-player roster.

Peter Primiano, Evan Place, and Brandon Motschmann were the only seniors with experience.

Senior Evan Place along with underclassmen Alan Diamond, Bobby Patrick, Jason Villeneuve, Ben Burton, Joey Conklin, Matt Lounsbury, and Greg Mulson made contributions for the Bulldogs.

The Guilderland girls’ soccer team had high expectations coming into the season and those were raised when they tied powerhouse Shenendehowa. However, the Lady Dutch were upset by Columbia in the Class AA sectional quarterfinals.

The Lady Dutch were led by seniors Jen Mihok, Kayla Best, Bianca Germain, Taylor Springer, Krystal Myers, Sam Ruppenthal, Carolyn Powers, and Cristina Rodriguez. Underlcassmen Jackie DeLuise, Devon Rosenberry, Lynn Tran, Amanda Best, Danielle Tetreault, and Julie Malkowski were major contributors.

The Voorheesville and Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls’ teams struggled during the season and were eliminated early in their respective sectional tournaments.

Voorheesville was led by seniors Ame Nadratowski, Monique Bidell, Katie Garrity, and Jessica Giglio.

The BKW team was led by seniors Amanda Altieri, Mariana Bartonicek, Krissy Dunston, Caren Shunney, Nicole Shultes, Rachel Viscio, Amanda Perciballi, Katie Moller, and Erika Miller. Also making major contributions were Cara Swain, Sarah Hannay, Stephanie Campbell, Lauren Ford, and Breanna Dees.

Tennis

The Voorheesville girls’ tennis team won the Section II Class B championship, the team’s second consecutive title.

Lexi Burtman, Jackie Daley, Alex Childs, Allison McArdle, and Lauren Watson were the Blackbirds’ singles players. Nazaly Kurkjian and Leanne Glaser filled singles spots when McArdle and Watson were injured.

Jackie Lansbury and Courtney Clark formed a doubles team and Brittney Albright and Nell Pritchard formed another doubles team.

The Guilderland girls’ tennis team won the Gold Division of the Suburban Council.

Chelsea Bush was the number-one singles player for the Lady Dutch. Kirsten Ackerman, Laura Santacrose, Lindsey Reilly, Lizzie Schaeffer, and Meera Chappidi also played singles.

Toni Gaspary and Reeya Boolchandani were the number-one doubles team for the Lady Dutch. Shahreen Virjee and Rachael Ellenbogen were the second doubles team and Mijung Kim and Megan Ryan were the third doubles.

Swimming

The Guilderville girls’ swim team overcame adversity as their assistant coach, Ed Sayer, died during the season. The athletes on the team memorialized him by writing his name on their arms and legs and by wearing T-shirts they made.

Senior Katie Linehan was given the Section II Scholar Athlete Award and finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle swim. She swam a faster time than the previous year when she won the race and set a school record.

Linehan qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard race, finishing third but swam it in 55 seconds to surpass the time needed to qualify.

Toni Marie Whitbeck qualified for the state meet in diving, making it after a great dive on her third attempt. She finished with a total of 360.7 points to just squeak by the qualifying mark.
