Hannaford celebrates a million-dollar remodel

VOORHEESVILLE — The Hannaford grocery store here will celebrate its “re-opening” this Saturday, with store representatives giving out gift cards, toys, and $2,000 to the New Scotland Community Food Pantry.

Hannaford Supermarkets, of Scarborough, Maine, purchased the store in 2007 from the Nichols family, who moved to Voorheesville in the 1990s to be small-town grocers. The store has remained open for business during the $1 million remodeling project this year.

“It is a significant investment,” said Michael Norton, Hannaford’s director of corporate communications. “Our store has a lot to offer, and, with the remodel, more to offer.”

The remodeled store includes a butcher shop and a chicken-wing bar featuring hot, ready-made food. Hannaford increased the selection of organic and natural products, and added more ready-made to-go meals, Norton said. The produce section has been redesigned, he said.

While the remodel may bring in more customers, it will also benefit the store. Hannaford put in new refrigerated cases that will reduce operating costs for the store by 25- to 50-percent, he said. The store added 155 linear feet of shelving during the redesign.

“It’s amazing what you can do when you remodel,” Norton said. “We’re kind of excited to be open on Saturday…to re-introduce ourselves.”

Hannaford operates 178 stores with about 27,000 workers in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York.

Store hours in Voorheesville will now be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Pharmacy hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The re-opening celebration will last through the weekend, with early customers receiving gift cards Saturday and promotional items on Sunday.
