GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland boys’ track-and-field team finished up a solid season with some good efforts by some young athletes.

The Dutchmen finished the season 7-4 in the Suburban Council, strong enough to win the Gold Division of the league.

“Our losses were to Shen, Colonie, and Shaker who are phenomenal teams right now,” Guilderland Coach Dave Kosier said. “We were hoping to beat Saratoga but things did not go our way that day. The 4x100 relay that had been running well all year dropped [the baton on] a hand-off and we were disqualified.”

The sprint relays were one of the strong points of the team this year.

The 4x200-meter relay team set a school record in the Eddy Meet in Schenectady with a time of 1:32.46. Yifan Chen, Mike Edmonds, Ethan Doak, and Mike Hieserman ran for the Dutchmen.

“The guys ran very well,” Kosier said. “We have a good group of sprinters. They stepped up and we got a lot of points there.”

The 4x100 relay team finished third at the sectional meet with a time of 44.52 seconds. The team featured Jeremy Bend, Hieserman, Doak, and Chen.

“We had to change it up a little bit,” Kosier said. “We put different guys in there and they would do pretty well.”

The Dutchmen as a team finished in seventh place at the Class A sectional meet which they hosted.

“Shen was way ahead with 148 points,” Kosier said. “Next was 68 by Shaker. Then it dropped quite a bit. We could’ve finished third if we got a few more points.”

Guilderland’s tradition of having a good distance runner continued with senior Roland Graves.

Graves had a best time of 4:21 in the 1,600-meters.

“That’s fourth all-time in Guilderland history,” Kosier said.

Graves ran 9:35 in the 3,200-meter race at the state qualifier meet in Johnstown but did not qualify for the state meet.

“He’s fourth or fifth in Guilderland history in the two miles,” Kosier said of the 3,200-meter event. “We got two good performances out of Roland.”

Edmonds also did well in the pentathlon.

“He didn’t run the 4x100 because he was competing in it,” Kosier said of the five-disciplined event. “He won the pentathlon at the Suburban Council championships and was in fifth place in the finals at sectionals. It’s neat to have a person be able to do five different events.”

Ian Tapler was impressive running the hurdles for the Dutchmen late this spring.

“He finished second at sectionals in the 110 hurdles,” Kosier said. “He did a nice job at the qualifier. He didn’t qualify, but he finished third. We got a very good performance out of him. He’s a junior so he’s coming back to us. He’ll keep moving up on the all-time list.”

Joining Tapler next year is a group of young runners who show tremendous promise for the future of the program.

“The freshman group, I’m excited about,” Kosier said. “We took every opportunity to run them and they kept breaking the freshman record. We’ve got a pretty exciting future. We have a lot of good guys coming back. They’ll move up in the ranks and help us move up in the section.

“We want to place a little higher next year,” Kosier added. “Overall, it was a good year.”
