Lauterbach runs fast to state meet

BERNE — The Berne-Knox-Westerlo track teams had some fast times this season.

And the season is not yet over for one BKW athlete.

The BKW boys’ team finished second at the Class CC Section II meet a couple of weeks ago and senior Ada Lauterbach will represent the girls’ team at the New York State Meet this weekend in Buffalo.

“We’ve been strong,” said BKW Coach Scott Hannay “Going back to the boys’ team, we were runners-up at sectionals to Voorheesville, which had a senior-laden squad. We’re a junior-heavy squad.”

Lauterbach qualified for the state meet after winning the Division II (small school) 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:08.62 at the Section II State Qualifier meet last Friday.

“She is in the top three in the state among the small schools,” Hannay said. “She has a real shot at finishing first in the division.”

Junior Greg Hannay finished second in the shot put at the state qualifier. His best heave was 51 feet, 2.5 inches.

“He set a four-feet personal record,” Coach Hannay said of his son. “That throw would have qualified him for the state meet. But the next guy comes up and throws and beat him by eight inches. Greg just got out-placed by one spot. Including the Division I guys, he is ranked number four in Section II.”

Josh Glick in the pole vault, Keith Cunningham in the long jump, and Zack Krimsky in the triple jump all placed at the state qualifier.

“Ada was our top gun and Greg just missed going to states,” Hannay said. “And the team as a whole set seven team records this year. The boys finished second at sectionals. We have a lot of returning juniors that had fifth- and sixth-place finishes.”

Meet winners

The BKW boys’ team had several winners at the Class CC meet held on May 31.

Jared Finke won the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:42.94. Greg Hannay won the discus with a throw of 138 feet, 4 inches.

Glick won the pole vault by clearing the bar at 13 feet, 6 inches. Cunningham won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 3.5 inches.

The 1,600-meter relay team also won a sectional title. Cunningham, Tim David, James Shager, and Glick won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:36.61.

Lauterbach won the 3,000-meter race as well at the steeplechase at the Class CC meet. She ran 10:26.35 to win the 3,000 and a time of 7:21.90 to win the steeplechase. Both times set school records.

Four Lady Bulldogs qualified for the state qualifier as did 11 members of the boys’ team including two relays.

With a young team, Hannay expects even better results next year. The coach feels that he can have even more athletes qualify for the state meet by wining their events in Johnstown, the site of the Section II state qualifier.

“We should have a strong sectional showing next year,” Hannay said. “We should have one of the top boys’ teams in 2009.

“A lot of the girls have gotten better,” Hannay added. “They will be contenders next year. We have a wealth of youth coming back next year.”
