GUILDERLAND The Lady Dutch lacrosse team is packing its bags to go to Cortland for the second straight year.
Guilderland earned a spot in the Class A state semi-finals with a 16-to-6 win over Lakeland-Panas on Saturday in the regional final game. The Lady Dutch beat Lakeland, 13 to 4, in the regional rounds last year.
“The game this season was similar to the one last year,” said Head Coach Gary Chatnik on Tuesday. “Lakeland is a powerhouse in their respective section. They gave us another tough game.”
Guilderland was trailing early on Saturday, 1 to 0, but scored six unanswered goals to take a 6-to-1 lead. Amanda Best scored three of those goals on assists from Danielle Tetrault and Bridget Daley.
“We played excellent defense and possessed the ball,” Chatnik said. “Winning two straight regional titles makes everyone very happy. But, the state title is our ultimate goal.”
Courtney Davis finished the day with five goals and Jen Madsen added two goals and four assists. Amanda Santandrea had 10 saves in the net for the Dutch.
The team faces off against Fairport at noon on Friday at the State University of New York College at Cortland. The winner will play either West Genesee or Farmingdale in the state final game on Saturday.
Guilderland was beat by Farmingdale in the state semi-finals last year.
“We’ve never played Fairport, but we’ve played similar opponents. It will be a battle for sure,” said Chatnik. “My biggest concern is that we don’t know much about them. We just need to keep the consistency of our play. If we do that, we’ll be OK.”
Chatnik told The Enterprise that it’s too late to change anything about the team, not that he would even want to. “The biggest threats that we pose are speed, stick handling, and team chemistry,” he said. “We have a good balance of 18 players and they all produce.”
“We were new to the stage last year and it may have distracted us a little,” Chatnik said. “Now, that we’ve grown, we won’t be so captivated by all the circumstance and media.”
