Celebrate Guilderland Center’s history on June 16

To the Editor:

The public is invited to visit the 1802 Mynderse-Frederick House and Garden from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, when the Guilderland Garden Club and the Guilderland Historical Society sponsor an open house in observance of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend.

The beautiful gardens created by the garden club will be on display with members on hand to answer your questions. Inside the house, historical society members will be available to give house tours and will have a photo display honoring the Guilderland Center and McKownville fire departments, both celebrating their centennials in 2018.

Garden Club members will have flower arrangements on display and are providing refreshments. Plan to visit us for this free event at 451 Route 146 in Guilderland Center.

This year, there are two additional places in Guilderland Center to visit. Just west of the Mynderse-Frederick House, the 1860 Cobblestone School will be open where a member of the historical society will be on hand to tell about the one-room school when it was in session, educating the youth of Guilderland Center.

Weather permitting, members of the Guilderland Center Fire Department will bring out their 1923 “Village Queen,” the first piece of fire equipment in the town of Guilderland capable of pumping streams of water two or three stories high. It was instrumental in fighting several major fires. The firehouse is at 10 School Road.

Consider visiting any one or all of these free locations that afternoon to celebrate Guilderland’s rich heritage. For more information, call 518-861-8582.
