GUILDERLAND — A fire blazed in the home of a new Westmere Fire Department member this week.

Fire departments received a call at 5:42 p.m. on Saturday that a single family home at 11 Ruth Terrace was on fire.

“Our first unit reported flames coming from the front of the structure,” said Assistant Chief David Szary of the Westmere Fire Department.

“The flames were knocked down within five to 10 minutes,” according to Sean Maguire, public information officer. The flames were contained to the area between the garage and the residential portion of the house.

All occupants of the house were out of the building by the time fire departments arrived.

According to the tentative assessment roll for Guilderland, the property, assessed at $139,700 with a full market value of $162,000, is owned by Christine Irvine and Michael E. Haley. They couldn’t be reached for comment.

“It is hard when you’re fighting a fire and you know the person who lives there,” Szary told The Enterprise. He could not release the name of the new fire department member, because he is a minor, and part of the Restricted Access Member program for people under 18.

“For us, it had to be routine, fight the fire and make sure there are no injuries to residents or firefighters,” said Szary.

The Westmere Fire Department was assisted by the Fort Hunter, Guilderland, McKownville, and North Bethlehem departments, and the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad and Guilderland Emergency Medical Services.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Maguire.
