David’s Unique Jewelers
GUILDERLAND — After 16 years in Hamilton Square, David’s Unique Jewelers has moved — only several hundred feet — to Star Plaza, where it has twice as much square footage, according to owner and designer David Sellie.
The store’s specialties are custom designs and restoration of old jewelry, Sellie said.
The store combines old-school craftsmanship with new technologies such as 3-D printing and CAD/CAM, or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. Three-dimensional printing allows customers to see how a design would look and feel, before it’s made in precious metals.
“Years ago,” Sellie said, “we’d sketch a design, or people would bring in a picture out of a book. We would sit and carve a wax model for people to view. It’s more cost-effective to do 3-D, and saves people a lot of money.”
Transforming a mother’s or grandmother’s treasures that may be outdated into more modern styles is another specialty that allows customers to honor memories while using and enjoying the jewelry, Sellie said.
He noted that the shop also does cleanings and inspections, and never charges for those.
David’s Unique Jewelers recently moved from Hamilton Square to a large space in the nearby Star Plaza.
Corrected on May 16, 2018: The caption in the first picture had been a duplicate of the one in the second picture; it was replaced with the correct caption. The caption in the second picture was corrected to say the jeweler had moved to Star Plaza; originally, it had said 20 Mall, which was the former name of Hamilton Square.
