ALBANY COUNTY — Josiel Guerra, 28, and Jennifer Sures, 21, both of Miami, Florida — arrested in Guilderland last year — were sentenced Friday in Albany County Court before Judge Peter A. Lynch for their roles in a counterfeit scheme, according to a release from the Albany County District Attorney’s Office.

Guerra had previously pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree scheme to defraud and one count of third-degree grand larceny, both felonies. He was sentenced to a total of three to nine years in state prison, the release said.

Sures had previously pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony. She was sentenced to two to six years in state prison, the release said.

Their crimes, which were committed throughout Albany County, unfolded this way, according to the release:

Between Oct. 13 and 14, 2017, Guerra and Sures, working together, used multiple forged or counterfeit credit and debit cards to buy United States postal money orders throughout the county. When they were arrested, they had 13 forged or counterfeit credit cards on their persons; 64 counterfeit credit and debit cards, as well as a laptop, in their rental vehicle; and 67 counterfeit credit and debit cards in their hotel room in Guilderland.

Police also recovered more than $28,000 in postal money orders that had been bought using the cards.

An investigation led by the United States Postal Service, the Colonie Police Department, and the Guilderland Police Department found that the pair had traveled to Albany County from Miami specifically to commit this fraud and mail the proceeds back to Miami, the release said.
