Peter Young Center being upgraded not for sale
KNOX Rumors that the Father Peter Young Housing, Industries, and Treatment center in Knox has been sold are untrue, according to center officials.
“Someone was looking at the land. There hasn’t been any action,” said Jackie Gentile, an administrator with the center. “The facility hasn’t been sold.”
Young, himself, referred questions to Gentile and to volunteer George Schindler.
“He handles all our real estate,” Young said.
The alternate treatment organization, which gives those in trouble with the law a second chance in society with counseling and job training, has three centers, including the one outside the village of Altamont in Knox.
Young is the chief executive officer of the three corporations, subsidiaries of Vesta Community Housing Development Board, Inc.
Schindler, an attorney and real-estate agent who is the volunteer president of Vesta, said that the nearby center is located on 100 acres, most of which are not being used.
“A couple of people have mentioned that they’re interested in a parcel,” Schindler said. The property straddles the Knox and Guilderland town lines. A survey was done recently on an 18-acre parcel on the Knox side, but the report is not in yet, Schindler said.
He said that he heard potential buyers of the parcel discussing a single house, as well as an apartment development.
“There’s no deal on the table,” he said.
He said that work done on the facility might have contributed to the sale rumor.
“We’re fixing up the main part of the property there considerable work, greatly improving the building,” Schindler said. “People may see activity. We’re going to retain ownership.”
