Town recycles more plastics
GUILDERLAND In recognition of Earth Day, the town of Guilderland announced that its recycling program has expanded.
Previously, only three types of plastic containers were accepted, but, due to a new recycler, the town can now recycle all seven types of plastic.
Supervisor Kenneth Runion said that the main goal of the Solid Waste Management Consortium, which Guilderland joined last year, is to streamline recycling. In the past, the recycler the town used could handle only three types of plastic, but, being part of the larger consortium, which uses a variety of recyclers, helped the town find a new company. Since14 municipalities use the recycler costs are off-set, said Runion.
Examples of the newly accepted plastics are drinking cups, yogurt containers, butter containers, and prescription pill bottles.
The program, according to Runion, should help reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill.
