GUILDERLAND — William Beer, 42, of Troy, was found guilty on April 9 of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office said in a release.

Beer had made the unusual decision to take his misdemeanor charge to a jury trial, which was presided over by Guilderland Town Court Justice Richard Sherwood.

The charge against Beer stemmed from an April 6, 2014 domestic violence incident, in which he intentionally and repeatedly punched another person in the face, said Cecilia Walsh, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office; the other individual required stitches, and suffered from substantial pain as well as bruising and swelling of the face.

The assault occurred near a residence in Guilderland, Walsh said.

Beer was arrested on May 29, 2014 after the victim filed a complaint with Guilderland Police.

Assistant District Attorney Dennis DiBari, who covers Guilderland, prosecuted the case.

Beer is set to be sentenced in Guilderland Town Court on June 9, and faces up to one year in Albany County’s jail.
