Nine people interested in being a GPL trustee, three slots are open
GUILDERLAND — Two library trustees who had been filling out unexpired terms — Nareen Rivas and Michelle Viola-Straight — plan to run again in the election on May 15. Carolyn Williams, who is four years into her first five-year term, will resign in April due to health issues, said board President Bryan Best.
That means three slots will be decided in the May 15 elections. So far, nine people — including Rivas and Viola-Straight — have picked up packets with petitions.
Williams, 84, is in her first term and has served since 2014; she has one year left.
She said this week that she had hoped to fill out her five-year term and said that this is a “very exciting time for the library,” marked by growth in the number of users, a wide range of educational programming for adults and children, and a proposed renovation that would make the facility “more user-friendly for patrons.”
Williams noted that the library’s loan program of items like long tables or fishing poles has also grown in the last few years. “It’s not just books, although books are great, too,” she said.
“Every trustee brings their own strengths to the board,” said Best in an email to The Enterprise, “and Carol’s strengths were her compassion, thoughtfulness, and absolute love of our community and the Guilderland Library.”
He continued, “She cared deeply for every patron, librarian, staff member, and person that the library could impact. I think that kind of unbridled and genuine love of the library will be tough to replace. I honestly believe there is no trustee who loved the library more than Carol. She was a tremendous advocate who the whole board will miss.”
The two unexpired terms were set to end in June 2018, said Best, noting that the top two vote-getters in the election will serve in those seats, for five years each. The third-place vote-getter will serve out the year remaining in Williams’s term, and then would need to run again.
Those three seats on the 11-member board are the only ones at play in this election.
Library Director Tim Wiles said that nine people have picked up informational packets from the library. In addition to Rivas and Viola-Straight, they are: MaryAnn Dunn, Steve Maggio, Mike Marcantonio, Barry Nelson, Frank Palmeri, Anthony Santor, and Brenda Taite.
Rivas was appointed to the board last June to fill the unexpired term of the late David Bosworth. Viola-Straight was appointed in November, following the resignation of Judith Kahn.
Library trusteeships are unpaid.
Library candidate packets may also be picked up at the school district’s main office, but school-district clerk Linda Livingston said on Thursday that no one had picked up packets there.
Candidates for the library board must be at least 18 years old and a qualified voter and must have lived in the district for at least a year prior to the date of the election. The public library follows Guilderland School District boundaries although it elects its own board and sets its own budget, independent of the schools.
Candidates must submit a petition with at least 53 signatures; that number represents 2 percent of the number of residents who voted in the last election. Petitions are due back to the district clerk by Monday, April 16 at 5 p.m.
